the day before turkey day.

i really didn’t think i’d care that much about missing thanksgiving when i came over here.  because, honestly, there are two turkey dinners within a month of each other, and i can handle giving one up, right?  but thanksgiving day (or what the brits call “tomorrow”) is literally around the corner, and with every blog and facebook status update i read reminds me of the fact that i’m missing out on:

  1. The Biggest Bar Night Of The Year.  which, okay, doesn’t really sound nice, but is fun because even though the bars are packed, everyone’s in a festive, holiday mood, because they’re off for the next four days! woo!
  2. i know i said i could miss a turkey dinner, but in all reality, i’d be completely content if i could have a turkey dinner at least once a week. and not just any turkey dinner, but…
  3. my mom’s turkey dinner. this woman gets up at some godforsaken time of the morning to start getting food ready for thanksgiving dinner. and on top of that, she also ends up making some sort of cinnamon rolls or something for breakfast as well.  (although last year i brought schnecken from frieda’s for both thanksgiving and christmas, because it is AMAZING.)  in an effort to cut down on the amount of work she does on thanksgiving day, my sisters and i have started taking over bits and pieces of the dinner to help her out.  my sisters usually bring some sort of casserole and/or dessert, and since i’m the alcoholic wine connoisseur in the family, i typically bring all of the beverages, adult versions and otherwise.  it may cost more, but since i’m lazy, it’s right up my alley.
  4. hanging out with my awesome family all day.  this typically includes (but is not limited to): eating a lot of food, talking, laughing, taking naps, playing with the kids, watching movies, eating more food and playing board games or cards.  it’s lots of fun, food and laziness.  awesome.
  5. a 4-day weekend!  (although i am currently not working, so a 4-day weekend is sort of silly at this point. to be honest, i’ll be quite happy to have a job again.  if i can find one.  yes, this worries me.)

notice that i did NOT say “Black Friday.”  i don’t mind shopping if there’s something i need, and i have the money to do so, but i don’t like shopping for shopping’s sake (even if there ARE great sales).  i don’t mind crowds when shopping, but when the crowds are so thick it takes you 10 minutes to walk 20 feet?  forget it.

i was considering making a thanksgiving dinner here, but i feel kinda out of my element, measurements are all different, it just wouldn’t be the same, etc., etc.  also, did i mention that i was lazy?  that may have something to do with it as well.  but, luckily for me, the edward wylie has a christmas dinner which i’ll be having tomorrow night at the usual thursday night dinner-then-pub tradition.  so in a small way, i suppose i’m still celebrating.  now if i can just get the people at the dinner table to go around and list one thing they’re thankful for this year, i’ll feel right at home.  ;)   (kidding, guys, i won’t really make you do that. or will i???)
